just another box office failure [29 May 2004|08:52pm]

it's a twenty-four hour battle
to defend our character in this world.
who knows who's winning?
who knows who's watching?
who knows if anyone's keeping score?
the audience are long gone,
seats left empty for seventeen years.
what you had to offer,
it was just so passé, so outdated, so seen before.
it's so screamingly obvious to everyone but you:
your character has been thoroughly assassinated.
you'll be shown out,
please don't make a scene.

sue of the perb. [03 May 2004|12:21pm]

practise yesterday was a tale of two halves, to coin the well known phrase.

the first half, not much cop. linz broke a string so we had to wait for a repair, and i just ate lots of food.

second half, different story. finished 'siren song' in about 5 attempts, with ashley at his creative best. the moral of the story is; give your drummer rough demos, he'll be much better for it. the boy is a supremo. i never thought one of our songs could be simultaneously hard hitting and funky.

i broke a bass string for the first time ever. strange experience.

i don't much like transposing things up an octave.

soon, this journal will probably go bye-bye in favour of the one on the website. just once i teach the guys how to use it.
battle of the bands is in something like 27 days. mr. timothy cooper suggested that the metro kids and those nice people in boy lazarus get together at the end for an epic closing number.. he sugested 'my heart will go on'.
once the metro buy a .com, what should it be? i was thinking something along the lines of metro-revolutions.com or metro-reloaded.com. or maybe metronotchicago.com (there's a joke for the kids in the wonderful state of illinois).

this week i have been listening to the postal service, bjork and fischerspooner. what about you guys?

on influences past and present [31 Mar 2004|08:12pm]

[ mood | pensive ]

time was when we all had the same influences, musically, inspirationally, et cetera.

we made fart jokes and could laugh about them for a few hours at very least. we could quote the blink 182 live album start to finish. we were the only people in our science class who knew who fat mike was. we all though matt skiba was the epitome of cool.

i guess at least some things don't change.

despite all of this commeradery, we were a pretty sucky band, if truth be told.

and now, things have changed. we all listen to different things, just crossing over in a few areas, we all have developed our own ideas and beliefs, we all spend time with different people and we have grown out of being 15 well and truly.

and it shows. can you say 'a diverse range of musical influences enable the metro to create wonderful music'? i sure hope you can, because you'll need to phone it into q magazine before they describe us as nu-metal, a la their brand new review.

love you,

i felt i should come on here and update.
here goes:

- last friday we had our first practice with ashley, who is playing drums with us right now. he is learning the songs gradually but we're confident they'll be sounding really good soon. we'll see how it goes for the nex few weeks before we think about making him a permanent member.
- the past few weeks i had a sudden burst of creativity and wrote lyrics for about about seven or eight new songs. we're now beginning to write the music to go with them.
- i started getting stuff together for a website that will have info and show dates etc, once we're ready to get back into playing shows... that should be sometime in the next few months i hope. it's been a long break (ten months??!) and we're definitely looking forward to playing live again. in the meantime a teaser page is up (http://www.themetro.myby.co.uk).. the picture is one i took of luke, cool right?
- that's about it for now... luke, tim and i are going to see brand new w/ straylight run and moneen this saturday.. a bn show should get us motivated. last time we went to see them was the catalyst for us scrapping all the old september last songs and becoming the metro. nobody has ever quite forgiven us.

anyway, if anyone is going the the zodiac for that show, i'll see you there.
in any case, take care everyone.

the metro are a rock. we roll, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. mostly slow.

the "rolling" i describe is the general pace of the band. sometimes, we write songs so quickly, and then completely nail them, and that's that done with. other times, it takes us an age to get a verse sounding the way we want it to. but it's worth it.

"...our thing is in our head. if we don't get it out, and hear it sounding the way we want it to, then no one ever will"

and that saddens me, because i believe we're really rather good. we write good songs, we all are fairly talented, and we put on a damn good performance for anyone who cares enough to watch.

be patient everyone. when we record, it'll be done right. it'll be perfect. it'll be excellent. and you'll love it. all of you.

thanks for sticking around.

we'll see you.

i'd like to respond to tim's previous entry:

1) i do not like being called emo
2) there is no accent over the last 'e' in 'extraordinaire'

thankyou for your time.
